UF, Softening and Multimedia Filter: Selection Based on Raw Water
Multimedia filtration, ion exchange softening and ultrafiltration (UF) target different contaminants. Which technology to choose for which raw water.
Instead of choosing pre-treatment equipment as a standard template in industrial water treatment projects, one should ask what pollutant load the raw water carries. The multilayer multimedia (anthracite/quartz sand/garnet) filter is a depth filtration stage intended to retain coarse particles and suspended solids (SS) in water.
The ion exchange resin water softening unit does not retain particles; It prevents limestone by replacing calcium (Ca²⁺) and magnesium (Mg²⁺) hardness ions dissolved in water with sodium (Na⁺) ions. Ultrafiltration (UF), on the other hand, blocks colloidal turbidity, fine particles and high molecular weight suspended loads with hollow-fiber membranes with ~0.02 micron pore diameter; but it is not a substitute for RO or softening to remove dissolved salts and hardness.
During the selection process, turbidity fluctuations of the water source due to rainfall/season, full water analysis, hourly peak flow profile and waste/backwash water infrastructure are examined together. For example, in surface waters or recovery waters with varying seasonal turbidity and SDI values, UF modules provide a very stable SDI (<2–3) barrier before RO.
On the other hand, in clear but high hardness well waters, tandem water softening or RO + antiscalant setup is evaluated for low pressure steam boiler, paint shop or cooling tower feeding. Elif Çevre Kimya projects all UF, softening, filtration and RO units according to raw water analysis.
The right pretreatment combination reduces both unnecessary initial investment costs and salt, water and chemical consumption. After commissioning, filter inlet-outlet differential pressures, outlet hardness, SDI/turbidity trends and backwash frequencies should be recorded regularly. System capacity or recipe cannot be fixed without seeing the water analysis.
The Function and Separation Mechanism of the Three Technologies Are Different
Instead of choosing pre-treatment equipment as a standard template in industrial water treatment projects, one should ask what pollutant load the raw water carries. The multilayer multimedia (anthracite/quartz sand/garnet) filter is a depth filtration stage intended to retain coarse particles and suspended solids (SS) in water.
Raw Water Source and Target Use Determine the Selection
Operating Cost and Field Tracking
The right pretreatment combination reduces both unnecessary initial investment costs and salt, water and chemical consumption. After commissioning, filter inlet-outlet differential pressures, outlet hardness, SDI/turbidity trends and backwash frequencies should be recorded regularly. System capacity or recipe cannot be fixed without seeing the water analysis.
Field Control and Monitoring List
Chemical dosage and system capacity decisions should be determined by analysis and facility conditions; There is no guarantee of fixed dosage or performance.
